In Part One of the duoHOME Spangle interview, we covered the history, the store, the design philosophies. But if you're living in a decorating disaster, how can you fix that — starting this very second? (And really, don't wait one second longer.) I asked duoHOME principals Tim Kempf and Scott Suskowicz for their tips to properly gayify your pad, and they didn't disappoint. Here's what they had to say.
Spangle: So let’s get down to brass tacks. Scott and Tim: We’re single!
Spangle: OK … but that’s not quite what I was going to ask. What’s the single biggest mistake people make in interior design?
Tim: I don’t think they consider scale of furniture in a room. I can’t tell you the number of houses we go to where there’s a nine-foot sofa in a room that’s eight by ten.
Scott: That becomes part of the shopping experience … when you go into a store, everything looks so small.
Tim: I can single out one thing: Precious Moments figurines. I think that those are the most despicable things on the face of the earth.
Spangle: Anything else?
Tim: Ohio is largely the land of beige and brown. I think people are terrified to paint something other than brown or beige. … It’s all the same nothing color.
Scott: I hate when people buy a lot of small things because they’re more affordable and try to cluster them all together …
Tim: Oh, a feature wall!
Scott: … instead of saving up for a more important singular piece, whether that be art or accessories.
Spangle: So what’s one thing people can do to immediately improve the design of their space?
Scott: If people would just pay attention to their lighting and proactively put in dimmers and low-wattage bulbs and not have glaring light.
Tim: Everyone should have dimmers in every room. Except the bathroom.
Scott: I believe in investing in higher quality wood pieces because those are the pieces you’re going to have.
Tim: People spend a third of their life in bed, and I think people buy the cheapest mattresses. … Design for me is all about the spaces that you love the most and spend the most time in. … A bedroom is a place you spend the most time with the person you love.
Or the person you hope to love!
